1. Varicose veins can be annoying from an aesthetic point of view as well as give cause to a feeling of heaviness, cramps, itching, infection and even open wounds (ulcers) on the legs. Over the years, various treatment methods have been developed for this.

  • The “best” known is the “stripping” or surgical removal of the diseased veins, which is normally performed on an out-patient (day-surgery) basis.
  • Alternatively, for some 3 years now, there is a laser technique, where the veins are cauterised, which results in a significant improvement not only aesthetically, but in post-operative recovery as well.
  • Finally, the bothersome and frequently disturbing capillaries can be sclerosised (sclerotherapy) during the consultation.
Thrombosis or lung embolism is potentially a life-threatening situation, for which in certain circumstances a filter can be placed in the vena cava.
