We treat benign conditions such as atelectasis and incidents of rib fractures differently. The treatment is done by means of exploratory surgery where the diseased lung tissue causing the collapsed lung, is sutured with an automatic suture device.

Benign tumours are removed by means of exploratory surgery using ultrasonic technology.

When a malignancy is suspected, the decision about removal of a lobe or the entire lung is made together by the pulmonologist and the oncologist. Possible follow-up treatment depends on the extent of the malignant disease.

The success of such treatment depends on the many years of close collaboration and teamwork of the pulmonary surgeon with the pulmonologist and oncologist.

Dr. Ludo Verougstraete’s experience of some 17 years ensures this. Survival studies of our lung cancer patients under our care have demonstrated that the 5 year survival rate of our patients surpasses the 5 year survival rate at the national level.
